Graduate Student Placement Services

The department places high priority on placing our graduate students in appropriate professional positions and we take pride in our recent placement record. To enhance placement of our students we provide numerous services.

  1. The placement director reviews application materials (curricula vitae, letters, teaching portfolios, etc.) before they are mailed.

  2. We hold periodic specialized workshops on the job search process for students on the market or soon to be on the market.

  3. The placement director, the DGS and individual advisers coordinate on advising students about strategies for application, interviewing, and negotiations.

  4. We hold practice sessions for all students who have been invited to give a job talk. Generally, attendance is excellent and helpful advice is plentiful.

  5. We work on socialization and professionalization over the course of the graduate career by conducting a variety of seminars (e.g., on dissertation planning, publishing, vitae writing, etc). In particular, our summer seminar series and our pre-MPSA and pre-APSA practice sessions are designed to assist graduate students in making smooth transitions to the academic stage.

In addition to the items mentioned above, the placement director is always happy to meet with graduate student on an individual basis to discuss any aspect of job placement.
